Reviewed by Christopher Hamilton, King's College London When I first went to university to read philosophy, I arrived full of burning existential questions about life, its confusions and meaning, and was pleased when my teachers assured me that philosophy was, as I had read before I arrived, the love of wisdom, and that philosophers made the question 'What is philosophy?' part of their very subject matter. But it seemed to me that they forgot about wisdom on day one of teaching and none of them engaged the students in any serious reflection on the nature of philosophy.
