Reviewed by Richard Kraut, Northwestern University This work continues to develop the project of the author's celebrated and path breaking book, After Virtue (1981) -- a project extended in Whose Justice, Which Rationality? (1988), Three Rival Versions of Moral Enquiry (1990), and Dependent Rational Animals (1999). A second edition of After Virtue appeared (with a new postscript) in 1984, and a third edition (with a new prologue) in 2007. But this volume can be fully understood by readers who have not read MacIntyre's previous work. Many of the themes that readers of his earlier books are familiar with emerge anew, re-worked and integrated with further thoughts.
