And in the mid-'90s, there was one subject on which aficionados of the genre were virtually unanimous; you simply had to read Longitude, Dava Sobel's bravura and best-selling account of the quest to develop a clock precise enough for the purpose of calculating longitude at sea. Yet I found Longitude curiously unsatisfying. Whatever it was about, I felt, it wasn't about science; the story it told wasn't about any deepening of our understanding of nature, but rather the gradual practical improvement of processes and mechanisms we already understood fully.. . .
