On the one hand, when reading the writings of Petrus Abaelardus, Duns Scotus, or Thomas Aquinas, we will have admired the elaborate architecture of their arguments, their logical ingenuity, and the finesse of their conceptual distinctions. On the other hand, we may have come to the conclusion that too many of their arguments are not sound, because they rely on outdated background knowledge or defective logic.
